Medication (for travellers)

The introduction of medication that can be harmful to your health must be avoided. If medication is safe for use, it will be registered and import will be permitted. Customs is responsible for ensuring that only approved medication is imported.

You can bring (a realistic amount of) medication for your own use. We may sometimes request proof that the medication is for yourself (or for your children). A medical passport serves as such proof. You can obtain a medical passport from your physician or pharmacy.

You may not import medication, for example, after ordering it online. Customs will seize this medication, unless you can submit the correct import permits upon import.

Is your medication covered by the Opiumwet BES? You will require an official declaration. Ask your physician or the authorities in the country of departure.

Many countries categorise strong painkillers, sleep medication, anti-anxiety medication, or other medication as narcotics.

Determine in advance whether you may bring certain medication. For example, by contacting the embassy of the country you will be visiting.
